The Wonders of Břeclav

If you look at today´s town with its industial firms, an important railway junction and modern developments, you might come to a wrong conclusion about the town´s historical roots, which reach back far into the past.

During the second quarter of the 11th century, a wooden castle was built in a strategic position (on the border of three states), which was given its name after its founder, Prince Břetislav. Later the name was also used for the settlement that existed on the territory of today´s Old Břeclav (Stará Břeclav).

For many centuries Břeclav fulfilled its mission as a border castle, it was marked innumerable times by war incidents, looting, fires and plagues.

In connection with the arrival of the first train in 1839, there was a great economic boom, new factories were built, the number of inhabitants increased, the town changed its appearance. By Imperial decree Břeclav became a town on 12 September 1872.

Today Břeclav is a modern town, situated on the crossroads of important communications. The town has approximately 27 thousand inhabitants. The life of the town and its parts is rich in folklore traditions.

Due to its location, Břeclav is the gateway to the Lednice-Valtice Area, which was listed as UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1996.
